Isa Egberts. She wasn’t the girl everyone thought she was. How many times have I thought about this since the summer? A thousand times? It felt that way. There were things about Isa no one knew. Things they could never know. Sarah might want me to tell her about her daughter, but there was no way I could do that. She had an image of Isa that was closer to that pigtailed girl in the pinafore than the headstrong, fun-loving girl Isa became.

And it was my job to keep that illusion going. Why add to Sarah’s grief by telling her the truth? The drugs, the sex, the lies. I’m sure, deep down, Sarah must have known all about it, but if she needed to pretend, then I wasn’t going to be the one to shatter her illusions.

I would concoct a version of Isa for her. I would stand in that school hall and tell them all about the Isa Sarah wanted them to remember. Her lovely, lovely girl.

And they would listen and smile and nod their heads, but know it was a lie, a polished version of who Isa really was. But they would go along with it, for Sarah’s sake. They’d sit there and listen to me present my perfect picture and they’d think, What a load of bullshit, and then later we would all offer Sarah our smiles and condolences and tell her how awful it was that Isa was gone. The lie was all that mattered. The illusion was all that was needed.

I would lie for Isa one last time. But once it was over, that was it. I’d forget about her. I had to. She’d ruined so much, and I wasn’t going to let her ruin the future. I wasn’t going to let her take anything more from me.

Oh God, and sometimes I think I should never have hoped for that. Sometimes I think it was as if I sent that wish up into the air only for it to turn into a curse. There was plenty of damage to be done still. Even dead, that lovely, lovely girl could unleash chaos.
